Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks: A Beloved Tradition

Manhattan Beach pier at Christmas

Illuminating the Season – South Bay Style!

Every December, Manhattan Beach transforms into a dazzling hub of holiday cheer, thanks to the annual Holiday Fireworks Show. What began in 1989 as a visionary idea by Pete Moffett has blossomed into a cherished community event that brings residents and visitors together to celebrate the magic of the season.

A Spark of Inspiration

The origins of the fireworks show trace back to Moffett’s realization that Manhattan Beach lacked a unifying holiday celebration. Inspired to fill this gap, he approached the city with his idea. Despite early challenges, his persistence paid off, and the inaugural fireworks show lit up the Manhattan Beach Pier in 1989, instantly capturing the hearts of attendees.

More Than Just Fireworks

While the breathtaking fireworks display is the centerpiece, this event has evolved into so much more. Picture kids laughing as they play in real snow at the beach, families sipping hot cocoa while browsing festive vendor booths, and live music filling the air with holiday spirit. All of this comes together to create a winter wonderland right by the Pacific Ocean—a combination only Manhattan Beach could pull off.

Pro tip: Arrive early to find parking and secure a spot with a prime view of the fireworks. Local cafes and restaurants along Manhattan Beach Boulevard and the pier offer a perfect place to grab a bite before the show.

Music will be performed by the Mira Costa Choir and the Mira Costa Jazz Band plays at 5 p.m., local favorite Joe’s Band at 6 p.m. with the big, 22-minute fireworks event at 7 p.m.

A Labor of Love

This event is powered by the dedication of local sponsors and volunteers who ensure every detail is just right. For decades, their hard work has kept the tradition alive, bringing the community closer with each passing year. The Holiday Fireworks aren’t just an event—they’re a reflection of the Manhattan Beach spirit: vibrant, connected, and full of heart.
